The Big Sleep…

Another night, another movie.  This one, The Big Sleep, a Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall mystery based upon the book of the same name written by Raymond Chandler.  It featured the prototypical hardboiled detective Philip Marlowe that was to become a mainstay of the hardboiled dective genre.

The plot had many twists making it hard to follow, but the dialog, and especially the onscreen chemistry between Bogie and Bacall was great.

I love the old movies, having watched countless numbers of them now, a love fostered by my grandmother.  We would routinely watch old B&W films on the local PBS station Sunday mornings on a program called Sunday Cinema.  By chance I found this clip on You Tube for the show.  This shows one of the inbetween segments with Ed Corvin.  Usually we got a bit of movie trivia and a preview of the upcoming movie.  Man does this ever take me back!  Sadly Ed passed away even while I was still watching Sunday Cinema as a youth in the late 80’s or earlier 90’s and the show’s hosting duties were taken over by someone else, whose name I can’t remember.  The ultimate sadness is of course that the show itself is no longer on PBS in any incarnation.  Luckily we still have the just as venerable Saturday Night at the Movies aired by TVO.
